Perkembangan seni rupa di dunia Barat telah memerkarakan substansi seni rupa itu sendiri, kemudian beralih memerkarakan medium, dan berlabuh pada tubuh sebagai substansi maupun medium utama.

Melati Suryodarmo, salah satu Performance Artist Indonesia yang paling terkemuka dan berreputasi internasional. Sebagai representasi seni kontemporer, Ia mempelajari kembali praktik-praktik tradisi dalam kehidupan. Lalu menjadikannya sebagi latar metode artistik kekaryaan.

Untuk memahami keterkaitan dua perspektif itu, menjadi penting menghadirkan Melati Suryodarmo untuk membagikan visinya tentang hubungan antara seni kontemporer dengan tradisi.

The development of fine arts in the Western world has questioned the substance of fine arts itself, then shifted to questioning the medium, and finally settled on the body as both the main substance and medium.

Melati Suryodarmo is one of Indonesia’s most prominent and internationally renowned performance artists. As a representative of contemporary art, she reexamines traditional practices in everyday life and uses them as the basis for her artistic methods.

To understand the connection between these two perspectives, it is important to invite Melati Suryodarmo to share her vision of the relationship between contemporary art and tradition.

Melati Suryodarmo (born 12 July 1969) is an Indonesian durational performance artist known for her physically demanding performances that often last for many hours. She has been a significant figure in Indonesia’s performance art scene for over 30 years, blending European irreverence with Asian artistic traditions, particularly drawing from Japanese Butoh dance and Indonesian spiritual culture. Suryodarmo graduated from the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig in Germany and has been mentored by notable artists like Marina Abramović. Her works often explore themes of endurance and the human condition, merging live art with various media.
