ARTIST PROFILE:

I Gede Arya Sucitra was born in Denpasar, Bali, on July 8, 1980. He currently serves as a permanent lecturer at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta, where he holds the position of Vice Dean I of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design for the 2024–2028 period and also serves as an Associate Professor in the Fine Arts Study Program. As an artist, Arya has participated in over 100 exhibitions throughout his career, both solo and group, at national and international levels. He has been part of significant exhibitions, including “Solidarity of Indonesian Artists Against Corona” (2020), “Sesuluh Andang” at the Fadjr Sidik Gallery (2022), “Mindscape Gravity” at the LAV Gallery (2023), and transnational exhibitions in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the USA, Hong Kong, China, and Hungary. In addition to his artistic endeavors, Arya is an active curator involved in numerous projects ranging from solo artist exhibitions to various community art exhibitions. He is also a prolific writer of art essays, often exploring topics such as experimental techniques in painting materials, contemporary Balinese aesthetics, the philosophy of fine arts, and issues related to multiculturalism.

I Made Bendi Yudha was born in Denpasar on December 25, 1961. He is a fine arts lecturer at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Bali and actively exhibits his work in major cities across Indonesia, including Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Malang, Surabaya, and Denpasar. Additionally, he has participated in international exhibitions in several countries, such as Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Japan (Setagaya and Okinawa), Australia, France (Monte Carlo), China, and the United States. His artwork is part of various collections held by institutions and private collectors, including the Bali Provincial Cultural Park, the Neka Museum in Ubud, and the Rudana Museum, among others. He has received several prestigious awards, including the “Dharma Kusuma” from the Provincial Government of Bali and the “Kerti Budaya” from the City Government of Denpasar, as well as national honors such as the “Satyalancana Karya Satya 10 Years” award from Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the “Satyalancana Karya Satya 20 Years” award from Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

I Made Subrata was born in Apuan Village, Baturiti, Tabanan, on December 31, 1965. He has worked as a journalist and editor at Bali Post from 1992 to 2025, and he currently serves as the editor-in-chief of baliprawara.com. In addition to producing various journalistic pieces, he frequently participates as a speaker and judge, and he also engages in book editing. Alongside his writing career, he is an active painter who has participated in several joint exhibitions since 1993. Some of his recent exhibitions include the Joint Exhibition of the Ragam Matra Group at the Bali Cliff Hotel Nusa Dua (1997), the Berawa Beach Art Festival (2019), the Water Holi (c) Joint Exhibition at Lv8 Resort Hotel Berawa in Canggu, Badung (2019), the Maha Rupa Batukaru Group Joint Exhibitions (2019, 2020, 2023), the Indonesia Art Community Virtual Exhibition in America (2020), the Joint Exhibition of the Happy Fine Arts Movement at The Kayon Jungle Resort in Payangan (2024), and the Joint Exhibition ‘Voice of Beauty’ at ISI Bali (2024), among others. He has also authored several books, including “Prof. IBG Yudha Triguna in the Eyes of Friends” and the biography “Nyoman Winata, A Small Note” (2022), and edited “Macepat, Angels Help Children” by Ns. I Nengah Suarmaya, S.Kep. (2022).

I Made Surita was born on July 27, 1951, in Payangan, Gianyar. As a teenager, he began his journey into drawing, concentrating on depicting nature and the human experience in the context of rituals. In 1968, he furthered his education at the Indonesian School of Fine Arts (SMSR) in Denpasar, where he learned batik techniques under the mentorship of artist Nyoman Darsana. While working as a journalist at Bali Post, Surita continued to explore his creativity, eventually developing a unique painting style that blends various stylistic elements from wayang, compositions of Young Artists, and traditional Ubud techniques. His artwork primarily reflects the daily lives of the Balinese people within the frameworks of rituals and religion. Since 1970, Surita’s works have been widely exhibited across Indonesia and in galleries in Singapore (1993, 1994, 1996, 1998, 1999), the Darwin Museum in Australia (1996), and the Darwin Parliament House (1997).

I Made Wiradana was born in 1968 in Denpasar, Bali, and graduated from the Fine Arts Program at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Yogyakarta. Since 1989, he has actively exhibited his work in major cities across Indonesia, including Bali, Yogyakarta, and Jakarta, as well as internationally in countries such as Hong Kong, Korea, China, India, and Belgium. He served as the Chairman of Sanggar Dewata Indonesia from 2000 to 2002. Among his notable solo exhibitions are “Imajinasi Purba” at Purna Budaya Yogyakarta in 1999, “Bentuk-bentuk Purba” at The Chedi Ubud in 2000, and “Deklarasi Seni Akhir 2001” at the ARMA Museum in Ubud. Wiradana has also participated in several international exhibitions, including the Beijing International Art Biennale and Art Asia Hong Kong. His accolades include a gold medal from the Art Asia Biennale in Hong Kong (2017), an award from the Indonesian Ambassador to Belgium (2006), and recognition from the Indonesian Consulate General in Qingdao, China. Additionally, he was a finalist for the Philip Morris Art Award three times, in 1996, 1998, and 2000.

I Nyoman Loka Suara, a painter born in Bali on February 13, 1970, studied fine arts at ISI Denpasar. Since 1993, he has actively participated in various group exhibitions, including the Palet group exhibition at the Come Out festival in Australia (1998), the Beijing International Art Biennale in China (2015), and the Asian Art Biennale II in Hong Kong (2017). He is also a member of the Militant Arts Fine Arts Community, and his artworks frequently showcase gloomy figures created using a distorted technique.

I Nyoman Sukari, born on July 6, 1968, in Ngis, Karangasem, is a painter recognized for depicting the mystical figurative world of Bali through the figures of Barong, Leak, and Rangda, all imbued with a creepy yet symbolic aura. An alumnus of ISI Yogyakarta, Sukari has made notable contributions to the art scene, including a solo exhibition at Gajah Gallery in Singapore (2002) and participation in various group exhibitions, such as Icon Retrospective at Jogja Gallery (2006), Environmental Art BendegArt at Amed Beach, Karangasem (2007), and Barak at Taman Budaya Yogyakarta (2008). Since his student days, he has received numerous awards, including Best Sketch from SMSR Negeri Denpasar (1989), Best Painting and Sketch from ISI Yogyakarta (1990), Best Oil Painting at FSRD ISI Yogyakarta, and an award from the Minister of Youth and Sports (1992), culminating in the Pratisara Affandi Adi Karya Award (1994). In 2000, he was honored with the Lempad Prize by Sanggar Dewata Indonesia.

I Nyoman Suma Argawa was born in Buleleng on November 15, 1956, and passed away on May 21, 2021. From an early age, he pursued various art forms, including dance, painting, carving, and mask making. Throughout his career, he performed in cities such as Jakarta, Semarang, Yogyakarta, and Jeju, South Korea. Since 1981, he had exhibited his works both domestically and internationally, receiving several accolades, including the Best Old Mask Dance Award at the Panca Mask Festival in Bali (1991), the Wija Kusuma Art Award from Buleleng Regency (2014), and the Dharma Kusuma Art Award from Bali Province (2017). Additionally, three Tejakula-style Wayang Wong masks he created are part of a foreign museum’s collection.

I Nyoman Suparta, born on November 11, 1971, is an artist from Tabanan specializing in fine arts and music. He began painting in 1988, focusing on themes of flora, abstraction, and underwater beauty, and launched his musical career in 1998 with the PARTA SS Band. He completed his foundational education in the arts at the State Art School in Denpasar from 1987 to 1990, setting the stage for his creative journey. Since January 18, 2018, Suparta has actively created works in his own fine art painting studio.

I Wayan Artana, born in Tabanan on June 13, 1966, is an accomplished artist who graduated from ISI Yogyakarta and has been consistently creating works since the late 1980s. He began exhibiting his art in 1987 and has actively showcased his pieces in major cities including Yogyakarta, Jakarta, and Bali, while also expanding his reach to the international stage in Malaysia and Switzerland. His artistic explorations have significantly contributed to the field of contemporary art. In 2024, Artana participated in a joint exhibition with the Bening Group titled Echo Energy at Dewangga in Ubud, which highlighted the continuation of his artistic journey that began over three decades ago.

I Wayan Gede Budayana, born in Singapadu on April 25, 1984, studied Fine Arts Painting at ISI Yogyakarta, completing his Master’s degree in Fine Arts Creation at the same institution in 2010. Active in exhibitions since the early 2000s, Budayana has conducted several solo exhibitions, including Distopia at TAT Art Space in Denpasar (2024), The Theater of Life (2017), and Reflection on Peace (2016) at the Oberoi Hotel Seminyak. His works have also been featured in various group exhibitions at notable venues such as the Neka Museum in Ubud, Titian Art Space, ARMA, and in Istanbul, Turkey. He is a member of Sanggar Dewata Indonesia and the Inferno group, and was a finalist for the Titian Prize in 2020.

I Wayan Sunadi, born in Tabanan on January 28, 1969, has been actively engaged in painting since 1990 and boasts a rich history of exhibitions in various cities both in Indonesia and internationally. He is a member of Sanggar Dewata Indonesia (SDI) and served as its chairman from 2011 to 2021; he currently holds the position of chairman of the Bantas Art Community (BAC) since 2021. His work has been featured in exhibitions at the Rudana Museum, Bentara Budaya in Bali and Jakarta, Puri Lukisan Museum in Ubud, and several galleries in Jakarta, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta. He continues to actively participate in both solo and group exhibitions, including the Bali Megarupa exhibition and various art festivals in Bali. Notably, his accolades include the Philip Morris Indonesia Art Award Top 10 in 1995, a painting award from ISI Yogyakarta, and recognitions from Menpora Akbar Tanjung and Ibu Tien Suharto in an ASEAN-level painting competition.

Made Gunawan has showcased his work in solo exhibitions at Galeri Hadiprana in Jakarta, Jenggala Keramik in Jimbaran, Art Village Gallery in Malaysia, Komaneka Gallery (Gajah Mina, 2021), The Villa Gallery in Surabaya (Living Harmony, 2021), and Harvest at Galeri Hadiprana Jakarta (2024). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Bali Mega Rupa 2021 at the Neka Museum, Argha Tirtha Sidhi (2023), and Group Maharupa Batukaru at Batuan Art Space (2024). In addition to exhibiting in Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Surakarta, he has participated in exhibitions in the Beijing Biennale, Singapore, Malaysia, the Netherlands, and Australia. In the realm of performance art, he has collaborated on visual arts wayang projects in Bali and Semarang. His accolades include a MURI record award in 2003 and the best sketch award from STSI Denpasar in 1997.

Made Sumadiyasa, born in Bali on February 8, 1971, is a contemporary artist renowned for his expressive and dynamic creations. A graduate of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta in 1997, he has crafted a visual language that transcends conventional forms and illusions, effectively conveying intense emotions through movement and color. His works frequently address themes of spirituality, the interplay between humans and the universe, and the impact of culture and technology on everyday life. In 1995, he became the first Indonesian artist invited to participate in the ART ASIA International Fine Arts Exhibition at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The following year, his piece “The Way to Eternity” was featured on the cover of the March-April 1996 edition of Asian Art News, marking a significant milestone for a Southeast Asian artist. To this day, Made remains actively engaged in exhibiting his work and continues to explore the energy of the universe through a poignant and visionary visual language.

Made Wianta, born on December 20, 1949, in Apuan, Tabanan, Bali, is recognized as a prominent artist who has achieved international acclaim. After completing his studies at ISI Yogyakarta, he expanded his artistic horizons by pursuing further education in European art in Brussels, Belgium, in 1976, immersing himself in visits to renowned museums and galleries. Throughout his career, he created thousands of works, including sketches, graphics, paintings, sculptures, and visual poetry, which have been showcased in countries such as the United States, France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Singapore. His artistic legacy is documented in several significant publications, including Made Wianta (1990), Made Wianta: Universal Balinese Artist (1999), Made Wianta: Art and Peace (2000), and Wild Dogs in Bali: The Art of Made Wianta (2005). Until his passing on November 13, 2020, Wianta was remembered as an artist who transcended the boundaries of medium, space, and generation.

Nyoman Gunarsa, born in Klungkung on April 15, 1944, and a graduate of ASRI Yogyakarta, is renowned as a key founder and figure of Sanggar Dewata Indonesia. Not only is he prolific in his artistic endeavors, but he has also significantly contributed to the development of art institutions by establishing the Nyoman Gunarsa Museum of Contemporary Indonesian Painting in Yogyakarta in 1989 and the Nyoman Gunarsa Museum of Classical Balinese Painting in Klungkung in 1994. His works, frequently showcased on national and international stages, often depict Legong dancers through dynamic and energetic brushstrokes. His commitment to the arts earned him the Dharma Kusuma award from the Provincial Government of Bali in 1994. Gunarsa passed away in 2017, leaving an enduring artistic legacy that reinforces the identity of Balinese art within the context of modern Indonesian art.

Nyoman Marsa, a painter born in 1952, was a student of Belgian artist Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès. In addition to his painting career, he served as a lecturer at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Denpasar until his recent retirement. His creative work reflects the unique characteristics of the cultural environment of the 1970s, and his pieces are held in various galleries and by prominent collectors. Since 2011, his highest auction price reached USD 2,453 for “Pertunjukan Tari Bali” (Balinese Dance Performance), which was sold at Sidharta Auctioneers in 2025.

Nyoman Sujana Kenyem, born in Sayan, Ubud, on September 9, 1972, completed his studies at STSI Denpasar from 1992 to 1998. His solo exhibitions include “I Am A Tree” at Zen 1 Gallery in Jakarta (2025), “Magnificence of Colours” at Yulindra Gallery in Jakarta (2023), and “Finding Balance” at Teh Villa Gallery in Surabaya (2022). His latest works were showcased in the Luxury Painting Exhibition at Home Style Sunset Road Bali (2025), “5Dimensions” at Labyrinth Art Gallery in Nuanu Tabanan (2025), “Widya Segara” at Locca Sea House in Jimbaran, Bali (2024), and “Bali Bhuwana Bindu” at ISI Bali (2025). He also participated in the Special Preview of the Gallery Benefit at the National Gallery Singapore (2023) and “Re:Set” at Gallery Sansu in Seoul, Korea (2023). Since 1995, Kenyem has been actively involved in various group exhibitions throughout Indonesia, Asia, Australia, and Europe.

Putu Sudiana Bonuz was born in Nusa Penida on December 30, 1972. He studied at SMSR Bali before pursuing a degree in painting at STSI (now ISI) Denpasar. Since the early 2000s, he has actively exhibited his work in both solo and group exhibitions across various cities in Indonesia and internationally. His most recent solo exhibitions include “Wave Dance” at Sudakara Art Space in Bali (2025), “Veils of Color” at Kayon Jungle Resort in Bali (2024), “Fatamorgana” at Sangkring Art Project in Yogyakarta (2024), and “Kidung Tanah Pusaka” at Hadiprana Gallery in Jakarta (2023). Additionally, his artworks have been featured in “Play Fulness” at Biji Art Space in Bali (2025), “Garis Bertutur” at Batu 8 Studio in Bali (2023), and “Luar Ruang” at Revoluta Art Space in Jakarta (2023). He has received The Best Artwork award from Kamasra STSI Denpasar three times (1995, 1997, 1998) and was a semi-finalist in the Philip Morris Art Award in 1999.
